Oct 19th - An Amazing Day!

What a Perfect Day!

Thanks to all the skiers for being so well behaved this past Saturday during our Ninja (Day) Camp.  We couldn't have asked for better weather and we couldn't have asked for a better bunch of kids!

From the "Walk on the Wild Side" Nordic Hike and Soccer Baseball (with sneaky Strength) to Roller Ski Agility and to Capture the Flag as well as hunting for Ninjas in the dark - you did it all!

Looks like some more good weather for our practices this week.  Let's keep-up ALL the good habits we've built over the past number of weeks.

Wednesday – Running and MORE Strength Training

We will continue to build upon the exercises we learned last week, as well as continuing to add in some new ones.

Meet at the Palace at 5:15PM so that we can get running right at 5:30PM.  The daylight is fading fast, but the practice will run right until 7:00PM.

It is the sixth week of Hardwood’s Wednesday Night Cross Series, so we will look to cheer on some of our favourite cyclists while they are working hard on the Cross Course.

After some cheering, we will be doing a run to yet a different part of Hardwood to find a few more good spots to stop for bodyweight exercises😁

Our goal is to run approx. 4km and complete FIVE groups of exercises.  Within each group, there will be one lower body, one core/arms, and one shoulder exercise.  Each time we stop, we will do four (4) sets and then keep running to a new spot!

These exercises will get you fit for ski season, and that will help you move fast which is FUN!

We will wrap-up the practice with a rousing game of Soccer Baseball!⚽⚾ similar to what we did on Saturday.

Be sure to bring good trail running shoes (and tall socks) as well as be sure to watch the forecast for the evening and dress accordingly.

Saturday – Nordic Hike and FUN Sprint Relays

We will be doing our first fun Sprint Relays this Saturday on a loop in the back portion of Hardwood.  We will hike with poles for about an hour prior to reaching the loop.

The goals for the Sprint Relays are to Have Fun, Support Your Teammates and try to be Consistent in your Times.

Much like a World Cup Team Sprint, each skier will run (with poles) around the loop once and then tag-in your teammate.  Each skier will run three (3) loops tagging-off to their teammate each time.

After we finish-up the Relays, we'll Hike back towards the Teaching Flats and wrap-up with a Game.

Practice will wrap-up between 11:30AM - 11:45PM

As for the rest of your week, here are some suggestions for other activities should you need them:
  • Be active every day, get enough sleep and be sure to always eat healthy
  • Running – Try for 20-30min.  Start easy, but find some hills if you can!
  • Cycling – Try for 45-60min, either on-road or off-road
  • Fun at Recess – Play Basketball, Touch Football, Grounders, or just about anything that has you moving and jumping
  • Strength Training – Try some of the exercised HERE that we do at practice on your own.  These can all be done either inside or outside and I would encourage everyone to try to do one additional Run/Strength session each week.  Perhaps each Monday combine them with a run in your local park or forest!
  • Be sure to keep working on your mobility either through stretching, yoga, pilates, etc.  There are LOTS of great resources online
We know that most of you are quite active between practices, just be sure you are doing something for 45-60min most every day.
