Eric and Emily - the bandits without headlamps...which was fun on the ups, but crazy on the downs!
Whaaat? I think there may need to be a special prize for skiing downhill on Wiggly in a back arch!
Yuletide Blast is always a Blast! It is our first race of the season and a great friendly location to get out our bugs, do a few things wrong, a lot of things right and get settled into a 'routine' for racing. Of course we will throw those al lout the window when conditions change, temperature changes or we have to wax classic...yikkers! Well I like the motto: You win some and you learn some!
I wonder what Klaebo has learned over the first few weeks of racing. I am not sure if you can zoom into his face, but it is priceless...he looks like a toddler having a tantrum. PLEASE do not try this at home. Races are ways to improve, to test our technique under crazy conditions and to hang out with friends. You will see your highlands friends whom we trained with about a month ago. Good times!
This week:
Monday Rest and or alternative sport
Tuesday: 5-6:30 at the Palace. We will do a warm up - Tristan did the 'crunch' for us to practice some turns on hills, followed by some (10 ish) x 10sec interval 'bursts'. If we have time we can do a couple of relay sprints under the lights for fun! Lets do this in skate in preparation for Saturday. Not to worry, we will start classic skiing a lot more over the next few weeks!
Wednesday: Strength - keep up the strength routine throughout the season - a short circuit including core is a good idea, nothing that will make you sore.
Thursday: Light ski (run if no snow) with some 5sec pick ups. 3-5 k if you have been doing those distances running. Think about technique if you are skiing.
Friday: Wax skis if necessary. Set out all of the items that you need for Saturday. Here is a list of things I think you need. Believe me a check-list is your best friend. I know people who brought 1 boot to a race before!!
Weather looks like possible rain Friday night and a high of 2oC on Saturday. Great for the race suit and gloves, probably no long underwear needed but up to you.
Warm up skis (if you have)
Race skis
Poles - same size :) skate
Boots (2 of them... like a 'pair')
Long johns (optional)
socks (bring a spare pair)
Race suit
warm up pants and jacket
gloves (mitts if you want, but it looks warm)
buff or hat
glasses if you have
water belt or bottle and snack
water belt or bottle and snack
*dry warm clothes to change into for after your race
Please make sure you have registered!!!
Please make sure that you remember that you are ambassadors of Team Hardwood when you are wearing the kit. You are expected to show top sports(wo)manship at all times - on course and off. Good manners go a long way. You don't need speed or podiums to make the team and your families proud, but you do need to be good citizens.
I would like to do a course pre-view ski at 9am (so arriving at 8:30ish is a good plan) There is a coaches meeting at 9:30 and races begin at 10:30 (likely these are the youngest racers) Exact start times should be posted when we arrive. We can arrange for groups to warm up together.
Warm up ski will have to happen about 30-40min- before racers ski. See example below. Warm up with your bib on inside out and switch before you race.
Sunday: I would like people to get out on some classic skiis. I'm not running a formal practice but will let you know what time I am going out for a ski and would be happy to ski together!
Example: Racer time is 11:15 needs to be at the race line at 11:05 and a good warm up is 20min slow Zone 1 - so back that up to ski at 10:35-10:55 which gives you time to change into race suit, put bib on and use the bathroom etc and be on line by 11:05 without losing too much of the warm up effects.
