March 4-10th Midland Cross

Hi gang!  So sorry to have missed out on a busy weekend of fun! I heard we had some excellent representation at the Nordikids race - race marshals and racers alike!   You are all such amazing ambassadors to Team Hardwood so I just want to say thank you.

I also saw some amazing cookie prizes from the new addition to the SOD series up in Parry Sound - a relay!  Wow, great work everyone.  What a weekend!

I want to say thank you to all of the parents!  The amount of time and energy (positive) that went into the last 2 weekends was enormous.  I am so grateful for the time you are volunteering with the team. It pays off for everyone. So a huge thank you.

As we enter March we are going to see warmer temperatures and after next week - more light at night so I am looking forward to some fun evening skis without freezing our faces off.  We are moving into a more 'fun' time of the team as Youth Champs are over and we have one remaining SOD race - The Mountainview SkiCross. It is not by mistake that this event is last...it is fun, challenging and potentially quite thrilling!  I don't recommend your expensive skis - shorter and wider if you have!

Thursday night - Team ski - 5:30 (I will be there by 5) I would like to do Classic tonight. Weather looks warm next week and we may want to skate in warmer temps.   We can do technique, one foot skiing, and  downhills.  Preparing for Midland cross requires practice cornering and downhills...so we will try skiing hard into a downhill and staying on our feet!

Saturday - Team Ski 9:30 -12 Skate technique (looking at weather) but as always please come prepared to classic and if its a Klister day we will not even bother!  We will continue to work on downhills and downhill cornering - and have some fun balance activities!

Sunday - CLOCKS GO AHEAD - Midland Cross - This is an interesting and exciting day. I will send out a message on What's App about what time we should warm up but usually 1 hr before first Team Hardwood skier - AND I will explain now that I do not ski with team on the practice runs. You go one at a time basically. You can go as many as you like - but please talk to your parents about skiing within your limits!!!  But you should definitely not race if you have not pre-skied the course.  The first lap should be slower, taking mental notes of the bumps and banks and any ups (there are a few). After that you can working gaining speed over bumps, slowing down before turns, banking high and accelerating out of the corners.

I know this is on downhill skis, but take a second and look at the body position of the skiers and pay close attention to the cornering. Look at how much they pump their legs - using quad muscles.

Just a reminder - we will have another dress up day for St. Paddys on the 17th of course!  Get out to your bargain shop and look for the green aisle! This was our group from last year..... I think we can even do better!!!!!
