What HSB will hopefully look like on Saturday AM!!!
Great job everyone for working through these past few weeks of uncertain weather. There have been some pleasant surprises in terms of conditions this past week and we should be pretty thankful that HSB has largely been able to remain open when most other local Nordic centres have not.
Looking towards the end of this week there appears to be a good amount of snow coming our way on Thursday night and through Friday that should set us up nicely for the weekend!!!
Tuesday - Skate Skiing at HSB
We will return to our regular time now that school is back. As HSB has postponed opening for Night Skiing until they receive more snow, so please enter and exit via Line 6.
Arrive between 5:20PM and 5:25PM so that we can begin skiing by 5:30PM.
A working HEADLAMP will be REQUIRED to participate. Please make sure you have yours packed with fresh/charged batteries.
Practice will run until 7:00PM as per usual.
Saturday - Seeing what the Weather Holds...
Stay tuned for updates over Email and WhatsApp about what we might be able to do on Saturday with the hopeful arrival of some new snow.
Should we get the projected new snow on Thursday and Friday, we will be skiing Classic on waxable skis in prep for Sunday's event in Parry Sound.
More details to follow on Friday including - finger's crossed - some kick-waxing suggestions for Saturday.
Sunday - The Sounder
We will also keep you up-to-date on the conditions at Georgian Nordic just North of Parry Sound in anticipation of the race being held on Sunday.
Just a heads-up for those newer to the Team, when there is a SOD (Southern Ontario District) race, or other race, that we attend as a team that acts as our official "practice" for the day.
There is some very basic ski prep you and your skier will need to do in advance of the event - see below:
- The Glide Zones - the section of the ski that is NOT grip waxed - should be cleaned, brushed and some fresh glide wax should be applied.
- The Kick Zones - the section of the ski in the middle where grip wax is applied - should also be cleaned so that we can apply the right kick wax prior to the race
As we've noted above, you won't need to worry about kick waxing for the race. The Coaches work with parents that have the required waxing "know-how" to do this for all skiers. Any parents with waxing "know-how" - and you know who you are - should be prepared to work with Jason on getting the skis prepped.
Though this is not a lengthy process, it is helpful if the skier has an extra set of other/older Classic skis (e.g. Skins or Crowns) that they can use to pre-ski their course - with the other Coaches and other skiers - while their "racing" skis are being waxed.
If you don't yet have a set of Classic skis that take kick wax, don't worry about most of the above. If you have Crowns, simply apply some liquid Glide Wax to the entire surface of your ski - Crowns too! If you have Skins, simply apply some liquid Glide Wax to the portion of the ski that NOT covered by the ski. If you have the correct liquid for the Skin itself, you can use that too.
If you have any questions about this process, please see Jason after practice on either Tuesday or Saturday as this is best discussed in person with the skis in question on hand.
Finally, once the Start List for the event is posted on www.Zone4.ca, we will set the arrival time to meet the Coaches to pre-ski your course. Stay tuned for more on Friday or Saturday, but with an 11AM start time for the Classic events, count on arrival at Georgian Nordic - just 10min north of Parry Sound - by 9:30AM in order to be ready on time.
As for the rest of your week, here are some suggestions for other activities should you need them:
- Be active every day, get enough sleep and be sure to always eat healthily
- Running – Try for 20-30min. Start easy, but find some hills if you can!
- Cycling – Try for 20-30min, indoors on a Spin Bike while watching your favourite show
- Strength Training – Keep up with the exercises that we did at practice in the Fall on your own. We would encourage everyone to keep up with doing one Run/Strength session each week.
- Be sure to keep working on your mobility either through stretching, yoga, pilates, etc. There are LOTS of great resources online
- We know that most of you are quite active between practices, just be sure you are doing something for 45-60min most every day.
