Week of Jan 13th - What a Great Looking Group

Fun in the SNOW!!!

From a fun group ski and our gift exchange on Saturday to some strong efforts racing at the Sounder on Sunday, we truly had a great weekend of skiing in some nearly perfect conditions!

Racing is a great teacher as it can often show you the areas where you have put in the work, as well as areas that will allow you to get faster by improving.

That will be the theme for this week - what can YOU improve that will make you faster the next time you race.

That opportunity will come this weekend at our first BIG race of the season in North Bay at the Ontario Cup.  Those two races will form our formal weekend sessions, but if your family is not able to attend we strongly encourage using the WhatsApp group to coordinate a time to ski with other families.

Tuesday - Skiing at HSB

We will look to Skate Ski again on Tuesday.  Hardwood is now open for Night Skiing, so please meet at The Chalet at 5:20 PM so we can get skiing by 5:30 PM and practice will run until 7:00 PM.

Projections right now are for around -5C at the time of our practice with snow in the air.  Be sure to leave extra time for travel.

Bring a HEADLAMP as we will do some agility work on the Teaching Flats and then WILL be heading out onto the trails

While on the trails, we will do some "intervals" and it will likely be snowing, so please wear an outer layer that sheds snow well.

Saturday and Sunday – Racing in North Bay

We will send more details out about this weekend's races in North Bay by Wednesday evening.

The races don't begin until Saturday afternoon, so plenty of time to make your way up that day.

Saturday will be an Interval Start Skate race that's a bit shorter.  Sunday will be a Pursuit Start Classic Race that's a bit longer.

For those wondering what a "Pursuit" Start means, the organizers take the times from Saturday and use them to set the start intervals for Sunday.  The leading skier from Saturday goes first, the second-place skier starts how ever many seconds back they were on Saturday, and so forth.

It is a really neat format that allows for plenty of skiers to "chase" and plenty of skiers to "run" from - it'll be fun!

As for the rest of your week, here are some suggestions for other activities should you need them:
  • Get out and SKI as much as reasonably possible!!
  • Be active every day, get enough sleep, and be sure to always eat healthily
  • Running – Try for 20-30min.  Treadmills are okay this time of year if you don't have a steady surface will all this snow!
  • Cycling – Try for 20-30min, indoors on a Spin Bike while watching your favourite show
  • Fun at Recess – Play Basketball, Touch Football, Grounders, or just about anything that has you moving and jumping
  • Strength Training – Keep up with the exercises that we did at practice in the Fall on your own.  We would encourage everyone to keep up with doing one Run/Strength session each week.
  • Be sure to keep working on your mobility either through stretching, yoga, pilates, etc.  There are LOTS of great resources online
  • We know that most of you are quite active between practices, just be sure you are doing something for 45-60min most every day.
