Wednesday – Running and Strength Training
Now that we've learned several new exercises, we'll be doing a bit more running and moving around on Wednesdays.
Arrive by 5:15PM and meet at The Palace so that we can get running right at 5:30PM and the practice will run until 7:00PM.
The Hardwood’s Wednesday Night Cross Series is also running at the same time, so we are going to cheer on some of our favourite cyclists while they are working hard on the Cross Course.
Be sure to bring good trail running shoes as well as some warm clothes for afterward as the sun will be going down as we are wrapping up.
Saturday – Trying Roller Skiing
Several of our more experienced skiers who are on the SOD (Southern Ontario District) Ski Team are going to be in Huntsville for a one-day session.
This gives us a good opportunity to try some Roller Skiing for the first time with our newer skiers.
We have a very quiet roadway/driveway we use is just about a 5min drive South of Hardwood at 630 Line 7 North. It is the driveway for the City of Barrie BioSolids Facility and is traffic-free on the weekends.
You'll be able to drop off your skier there but be advised that there isn't really much space for more than one or two cars at a time.
We will ski back/forth on the driveway for just about an hour, then carefully ski about 800m North to the Oro Fairgrounds at 86 15/16 Sideroad East.
We'll play some games there and be ready for pick-up at 11:30AM.
For Roller Skiing, you’ll need the following:
- Helmet (MANDATORY) – Any Bike Helmet will do so long as it fits
- Bring Coloured Shirt, Vest or Jacket (MANDATORY) – You need to be visible to all
- Thin Gloves (Optional) – As most ski pole straps fit better and don’t rub your hand with gloves on
- Knee Protection (Optional) – By no means required, but something like volleyball knee pads will work
- Poles for Roller Skiing – Any poles with good sharp tips will do. Last year’s skate poles would be best as most will have grown a bit since then
- Skate or Combi Boots – We’re just going to work on Double Poling and easy Skating, so either will work
- Roller Skis – If you haven't already, please email me directly as to whether you have access to Roller Skis and, if so, whether they can be shared with a family member. If you don’t have access to Roller Skis, don’t worry as the club does have some we can use. If you also haven't already, please email me directly with what type of boot sole (SNS, NNN, or Prolink) you have so that we have a sense of what skis we will need to pull from storage.
As for the rest of your week, here are some suggestions for other activities should you need them:
- Be active every day, get enough sleep and be sure to always eat healthily
- Running – Try for 20-30min. Start easy, but find some hills if you can!
- Cycling – Try for 45-60min, either on-road or off-road
- Fun at Recess – Play Basketball, Touch Football, Grounders, or just about anything that has you moving and jumping
- Strength Training – Try to do one additional Run/Strength session each week. Perhaps each Monday combine them with a run in your local park or forest!
- Be sure to keep working on your mobility either through stretching, yoga, pilates, etc. There are LOTS of great resources online
We know that most of you are quite active between practices, just be sure you are doing something for 45-60min most every day.
Attendance Sheet
We will be going back to using an attendance sheet starting next week so that we have a clear sense of who will be attending practice. If you are running late for whatever reason, please post in the WhatsApp Group so that we don't leave you behind and/or we can let you know where to meet, or catch-up, with us.
Please see the email from Ray Ryan about joining the WhatsApp group and look for a forthcoming email from us about attendance.
Ski Swap
Look for some information this week regarding volunteers needed at the Hardwood Ski Swap for which the Team receives a donation in exchange for our help.
Fall Weekend Camp
We are looking at the weekend of Oct 23rd and 24th for our Fall Weekend "Ninja" Camp. Stay tuned for more details later this week, but mark those dates in your calendar for a weekend of Ski Fun - all of which takes place in the area around Hardwood.
See you on the Trails,
Sarah, Bronwen, Adam and Jason
